Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) is an emerging marine CO₂ removal method but its environmental effects are insufficiently understood. The OAE Pelagic Impact Intercomparison Project (OAEPIIP) provides funding for a standardized and globally replicated microcosm experiment to study the effects of OAE on plankton communities. Here, we provide a detailed manual on the OAEPIIP experiment. We expect OAEPIIP to help build scientific consensus on the effects of OAE on plankton.

Because of its importance for climate regulation and soil health, many studies are focusing on carbon dynamics in soils. However, quantifying organic and inorganic carbon remains an issue in carbonated soils. In this technical note, we propose a validated correction method to quantify organic and inorganic carbon in soils using Rock-Eval® thermal analysis. With this correction, Rock-Eval® method has the potential to become the standard method for quantifying carbon in carbonate soils.

Do-it-yourself hardware is a new approach for improving measurement resolution in research. Here we present a low-cost, automated system for field measurements of nitrate in soil pore water and open water bodies. All data hardware components cost is $1,100, much cheaper than other available commercial solutions. We provide the complete building guide to reduce any technical barriers, which we hope will allow easier reproducibility and open new soil and environmental monitoring applications.

Greenhouse gases are produced and consumed via a number of pathways. Quantifying these pathways helps reduce the climate and environmental footprint of anthropogenic activities. The contribution of different pathways can be estimated from the isotopic composition, which acts as a "fingerprint" for these pathways. Interpreting this data is challenging. We have developed the TimeFRAME model to simplify interpretation, and estimate the contribution of different pathways and their uncertainty.
