Field campaigns are instrumental in providing ground truth for understanding and modeling global ocean biogeochemical budgets. A survey however can only inspect a fraction of the global oceans, typically a region hundreds of kilometers wide for a temporal window of the order of (at most) several weeks. In this spatiotemporal domain, mesoscale variability can mask climatological contrasts. Here we propose the use of multisatellite-based Lagrangian diagnostics to solve this issue.

We used a forest dynamic model, calibrated with data from the 20-year study site of Paracou, French Guiana, to test a set of climatic variables on tree growth and mortality probabilities. Severe droughts decreased annual growth and mortality rates, high precipitation increased mortality rates and high temperature decreased tree growth. Best resistance to drought was found for trees with high wood density and for trees with small current diameters.

This study presents seasonal cycles of organic matter concentration and composition in the Fraser River. Dissolved organic matter patterns are linked to flushing of shallow soil layers during spring snowmelt and fall rain events. The preliminary Hg data set indicates significant changes in concentrations during the spring freshet. Organic carbon export, as both area-normalized yield and the proportion of basin primary productivity, in the Fraser River is typical of large rivers globally.

The study provides first insight into eco-hydrological consequences of the continuing oil palm expansion in the tropics. Stand transpiration rates of some studied oil palm stands compared to or even exceeded values reported for tropical forests, indicating high water use of oil palms under certain conditions. Oil palm landscapes show some spatial variations in (evapo)transpiration rates, e.g. due to varying plantation age, but the day-to-day variability of oil palm transpiration is rather low.

This paper offers a new methodology to study paleo-coral bleaching events using high-resolution femtosecond Laser Ablation Multiple Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Coral bleaching records only go back several decades, but this new proxy allows the study of bleaching events that occurred tens of thousands of years ago. Unlike other methods, the high-resolution of the method can detect bleaching events that occur over very short time periods, just a few weeks.

We developed a process-based model for peatland micro-topography and hydrology, the Hummock-Hollow (HH) model, which explicitly represents small-scale surface elevation changes. By coupling the HH model with a model for soil methane processes, we are able to model the effects of micro-topography on hydrology and methane emissions in a typical boreal peatland. We also identify potential biases that models without a micro-topographic representation can introduce in large-scale models.

Using the latest earth system models, we find that shifts in nutrient and light availability with future climate warming drive latitudinally banded changes in Southern Ocean phytoplankton distributions, which have the potential to significantly alter nutrient cycling as well as higher trophic level productivity throughout the global ocean. Spatial patterns in the modelled mechanisms driving these predicted phytoplankton trends qualitatively agree with recent observations.

Stem rot is a poorly constrained source of error in forest biomass estimates. We quantified frequency and severity of rot in stems felled, drilled, and cored in a Bornean rainforest and the association of stem rot with tree size, taxonomy, and edaphic conditions. Stem rot frequency increased with tree size and varied widely among taxa. Stem rot encompassed 9% of stem volume on average, and the reduction in forest biomass lost to rot was greater on low fertility compared to high fertility soils.

A new technique to determine a size-fractionated global soil elemental emission inventory based on a global soil and mineralogical data set is introduced. Spatial variability of mineral dust elemental fractions (8 elements, e.g., Ca, Fe, Al) is identified on a global scale, particularly for Ca. The Ca/Al ratio ranged between 0.1 and 5.0 and is confirmed as an indicator of dust source regions by a global dust model. Total and soluble dust element fluxes into different ocean basins are estimated.

We investigate surface ocean pCO2 and air-sea CO2 fluxes climatological variability through biogeochemical modeling in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Surface ocean pCO2 spatio-temporal variability was found to be controlled mainly by temperature and Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC). Biological production, physical transport and solubility are the main controlling processes. With different behaviors on subtropical and subantarctic open ocean, and on inner/outer continental shelves.

We found that regional warming promotes widespread deepening of soil thaw in the pan-Arctic area; continued warming will most likely promote permafrost degradation in the warm permafrost areas. We also found that deeper snowpack enhances soil respiration from deeper soil carbon pool more than temperature does, particularly in the cold permafrost areas, where a large amount of soil carbon is stored in deep perennial frozen soils but is potentially vulnerable to mobilization from climate change.

We found that in Indonesia, oil palm displayed reduced soil CO2 fluxes compared to forest and rubber plantations; this was mainly caused by reduced litter input. Furthermore, we measured reduced soil CH4 uptake in oil palm and rubber plantations compared to forest; this was due to a decrease in soil N availability in the converted land uses. Our study shows for the first time that differences in soil fertility control soil-atmosphere exchange of CO2 and CH4 in a tropical landscape.

In this manuscript, habitat-specific acidification projections are presented for four near-shore habitats in the Southern California Bight using high-temporal-resolution pH sensor data: surf zone, kelp forest, canyon edge, and the shelf break. All habitats were within 5km of one another and exhibited unique, habitat-specific CO2 variability signatures and acidification trajectories, demonstrating the importance of making projections in the context of habitat-specific CO2 signatures.

Using Finite element modelling (FEM) we show that a simplified geometric FE model can predict the structural strength of the coralline algal skeleton. We compared a series of 3D geometric FE-models with increasing complexity to a biologically accurate model derived from computed tomography (CT) scan data. Using geometric models provides the basis for a better understanding of the potential effect of climate change on the structural integrity of these organisms.

This study uses observations from both a mooring at the surface and a sediment trap at around 3000m in the Northeast Atlantic. Observations of nitrogen and carbon are used to calculate the seasonal net community production (NCP) and new production, and we find that there is a larger uptake of carbon than would traditionally be expected. Only a small fraction of the surface production reaches the sediment trap, and using a particle-tracking approach we find that the source regions vary widely.
