The Mauritanian–Cap Vert upwelling is shown to be sensitive to climate change forcing on upwelling processes, which strongly affects the CO₂ surface distribution, ocean acidification rates, and air–sea CO₂ exchange. We confirmed an upwelling intensification, an increase in the CO₂ outgassing, and an important decrease in the pH of the surface waters. Upwelling areas are poorly studied and VOS lines are shown as one of the most significant contributors to our knowledge of the ocean's response.

Wildfire is a dominant disturbance agent in forest ecosystems, shaping important processes including net carbon (C) balance. Our results imply that fire-regime variability is a major driver of C trajectories in stand-replacing fire regimes. Predicting carbon balance in these systems, therefore, will depend strongly on the ability of ecosystem models to represent a realistic range of fire-regime variability over the past several centuries to millennia.

Primary production in the Southern Ocean is a key contributor to mitigating global anthropogenic carbon dioxide; however, the controlling mechanisms are poorly understood. A series of experiments were performed to look at whether the rates of primary production are limited by the biogeochemically important micronutrient iron. The results demonstrate that any global climate models that do not take into account the effect of iron availability could underestimate primary production by up to 80 %.

We examined the seasonal variation in diel hysteresis between soil respiration and temperature, and its controlling factors in a desert-shrub ecosystem. Our results indicated that soil water regulated the control of photosynthesis on diel soil respiration, causing seasonal variation in diel hysteresis. The results highlight the importance of biologically based mechanisms and the role of soil water in regulating diel hysteresis.

A remote-sensing biophysical approach for estimating daily evapotranspiration and carbon uptake was tested at Mediterranean forest and non-forest sites in Israel after accounting for root zone water deficit. A newly developed mobile lab system and an active FLUXNET station were used for validation. The model successfully tracked observed changes in fluxes, showing promise for a reliable ecosystem-level assessment. Changes in water use efficiency due to afforestation were assessed in Israel.

Dissolved carbon dioxide levels in the oceans are rising and this is causing a drop in the pH (ocean acidification). This potentially effects all marine organisms, including those in polar regions. Sea ice algae are naturally exposed to a wide range of pH and CO₂ concentrations, particularly during the ice formation and melting cycles. However, all studies so far have shown ice algae to be quite resilient to change. This includes the effects of co-stressors such as light, iron and temperature.

Here we investigate soil carbon and nitrogen stocks in pairwise mixed plantations and corresponding monocultures at different stand ages to assess the effects of admixture on soil carbon and nitrogen over time. Our results showed that the admixtures created age-dependent positive effects on carbon sequestration and soil nitrogen stock, indicating that the capacity of carbon sequestration and nitrogen retention in mixed forests was age related, as was the magnitude of admixing effects.

We evaluated soil crust communities 12–16 years after four wildfires in Idaho, USA, compared with adjacent unburned plots. We found that richness and abundance were lower in burned plots and that the cover of soil crusts was more strongly affected by wildfire at sites with well-developed soil crusts. Furthermore, we found that three large functional groups of lichens and mosses were associated with unburned sites and that fire severity was not related to post-fire soil crust communities.

Recent evidences suggest that the proportion of cell-free relative to the total EEA is usually comparable or larger than to the cell-associated. Yet, it is unknown what is the fate of those cell-free enzymes in ocean (which are still active) nor what controls their activities. We found that the activity of cell-free enzymes is affected by both temperature and UV light and that this effect was enzyme specific, suggesting a link between warming and the degradation of organic matter in the sea.

Hydrogen isotopes of lipids provide valuable information about microbial activity, climate, and environmental stress. We show that heavy hydrogen in fatty acids declines from spring to summer in a nutrient-rich and a nutrient-poor lake and that the effect is nearly 3 times as big in the former. This effect is likely a combination of increased biomass from algae, warmer temperatures, and higher algal growth rates.
