This study investigates how carbon moves from the ocean surface to the depths in the equatorial Atlantic, contributing to long-term carbon storage. Using an Argo float equipped with a camera, we captured two periods with major carbon export events. By identifying particle types and their sinking behaviors, we found that smaller, compact particles are key drivers of carbon transport. Our findings underscore the value of using imaging tools on autonomous platforms in tracking carbon sequestration.

Humidification of air reduces the abundances of dry-air gas components such as oxygen, explaining why tropical humidity can be "stifling". This is overlooked due to the common expression of gas concentrations as fractions of dry air. Such neglect of water vapour also masks the key role of its sources and sinks in activating transport mechanisms of other gases. Humidity should be quantified whenever reporting gas concentrations.

Hydrothermal plumes of iron (Fe) have been observed to persist in the deep ocean, but the exact mechanisms that contribute to the long-range transport of Fe are not well defined. We collected plume waters from three different vent systems along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and monitored the temporal evolution of the physical and chemical forms of iron and its interaction with organic matter over time to learn about the mechanisms that control its dispersion.

Net ecosystem and soil fluxes of the greenhouse gases methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) were measured in a wet tropical forest. The measurements covered a 26-month period including contrasting seasons. The forest absorbed CH₄ during the driest season, and emitted it during the wettest season, while consistently emitting N₂O. The studied upland soils consistently absorb CH₄ but emit N₂O. Statistical models identified soil water content as one of the key drivers of these greenhouse gas fluxes.

Symbiotic ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi have an important role in mineral weathering and base cation uptake in boreal forests. We characterised base cation transporter diversity and their evolution in ECM fungi in relation to weathering capabilities, and quantified base cation uptake from pulverised rock. Base cation transporter gene families evolved rapidly in the genus Suillus, with gene copy numbers correlating with base cation uptake in some cases, suggesting links to weathering capabilities.

Marine sediments store organic carbon and help regulate climate. Oxygen-depleted waters are thought to enhance this, however Western Gotland Basin sediments show low carbon despite such conditions. We studied the role of mineral protection, which can shield carbon from microbes, and found it limited. This suggests that without physical protection, carbon remains accessible and gets degraded, making mineral protection a key factor in carbon preservation.

Microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) is considered an environmentally conscious technology for soil amelioration. We study the response of microbiomes to MICP stimulation in arid soils from different sites and depths. We show that different soil depths host distinct microbiomes, and that biostimulation selects for specific taxa while suppressing others. The study provides evidence for the effectiveness of biostimulation, yet shows that it comes with a cost for biodiversity.  

Partial pressure of CO₂ (pCO₂) measurements were collected on the Astan buoy over nearly 5 years. Using advanced statistical tools, this study revealed that pCO₂ variations, along with other parameters, follow turbulent and intermittent dynamics. We highlights the irreversibility of the thermal and non-thermal components of pCO₂ and explores their links to temperature, biological production, and atmospheric or terrigenous inputs, providing new insights into high-frequency pCO₂ variability.
