As pointed out by Reviewer 2, the manuscript had a long Discussion section. Even after revision, about 60% of the text body (436 out of 720 lines) is occupied by Discussion. I understand you made efforts for re-focusing the manuscript, but still recommend doing it again (although not mandatory). For example, both 4.1.3 and 4.2.2 deal with “Belowground ecology”. Can you merge them to condense Discussion?

Minor corrections you should address.
- Line 1006 (revised manuscript): the reference to Oleason et al. lacks the information on publication year. Also, I do not agree to cite this as a reference to MODIS land cover data (Line 213 in revised manuscript).
- In Supplementary Material, you provided References from table S1. This is quite informative for readers, but I recommend correcting styles of the references. For example, many “CO2” do not have subscript “2” (e.g., ref. 6, 12, 14, etc.). Journal names are not shown in the same manner. For example, the ref. 1 used New Phytologist, and the ref. 8 used New Phytol. In the ref. 33, some author names (i.e., MICHELSEN and SCHMIDT) are in capitals. Please check again throughout the list.
- Figure 2: please capitalize variable names (left) for the first word only (like Soil nitrogen).
