Short summary
This study examines sediment nitrogen removal using 15N tracing and multiomics across 17 Eastern China Plain lakes. Results show that denitrification dominates nitrogen loss, and eutrophication amplifies removal capacity while decoupling genetic potential from active expression. Furthermore, macro factors indirectly drive removal by reshaping local physicochemical properties. These insights facilitate better management strategies to safeguard lake ecosystem services under global change.
