Editorial statement
Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is an emerging climate change mitigation strategy. Quantifying the carbon dioxide removal associated with ERW is a major challenge in the field. This study presents results from a uniquely long-term (five-year) agricultural ERW field trial and provides direct field evidence that substantial silicate weathering and associated carbon dioxide removal can occur in temperate sandy soils, such as those found in Northern Europe. It combines this with an investigation of changes in soil organic carbon, another topic of great interest in the ERW community, to better understand carbon dynamics and sequestration potential in agricultural fields.
Short summary
Enhanced rock weathering involves spreading ground silicate rock on farmland to remove atmospheric CO₂ as the rock dissolves. Soil samples taken five years after Greenlandic glacial rock flour was applied to a Danish field showed that over half the applied material had dissolved, yet the increase in soil organic carbon was substantially greater than the estimated inorganic carbon uptake through weathering. This highlights the importance of considering both pathways when assessing climate impact.
