Short summary
This study examines how winds, ocean currents, and Saharan dust influence the transfer of carbon-rich material from surface waters to the deep open ocean off NW Africa. By tracking seawater pathways and sinking particles throughout the year, the research shows that winter-spring upwelling drives offshore export, while summer dust deposition contributes through ballasting and episodic fertilisation. This study improves our understanding of the drivers controlling open ocean export production.
