Short summary
In nutrient‑poor open ocean, scarce diatoms still remove CO₂. In the western North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG), we found different diatoms live at different depths. Where a warm current (Kuroshio) flows, large diatoms carry more carbon to deep water; elsewhere their contribution is lower. Microbes lack genes to digest protective polymers made by diatoms, which may help carbon sink efficiently. To predict ocean climate role, we must know not only which algae are present but also how well their organic matter resists decay.
