Short summary
Water sensors that measure oxidation-reduction potential are difficult to interpret because each reading reflects many chemical reactions at once. Using a simple mathematical analysis and 21 months of pond observations, we found that a stable relationship between dissolved oxygen and sensor readings can indicate a stable reaction balance. Excavation disrupted this relationship at the most affected site, and its later partial recovery showed that the approach can track environmental change.
