Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement is a climate change mitigation strategy that can reduce the amount of CO₂ in our atmosphere. In this study we add three different sources of alkalinity to natural seawater to assess how these chemicals might change carbon partitioning within seawater. The alkalinity we added had little impact on the marine carbon system except that a 4-day exposure to ~1000 µmol kg^–1 alkalinity from calcium oxide addition can negatively impact the production of organic matter.

The peatlands of Central America are vastly understudied, despite their role as long-term carbon stores. This study presents 9 new peat-core datasets from different landscapes found across Costa Rica. Our approach includes multiple paleoenvironmental tools that provide peatland ages, peat-soil geochemical characteristics, and ecological succession histories. The total peat carbon store in Costa Rica is estimated at 0.15 gigatonnes and the averaged peatland carbon stock is 1080 Mg C/ha. 

Foraminifera are tiny marine organisms that build shells and have evolved different ways of doing so over millions of years. By comparing two major groups living side by side in the Mediterranean Sea, this study shows that their shells record clear, systematic chemical differences. These contrasts reveal fundamentally different shell-building strategies shaped by evolution, not just by the surrounding environment.
