Short summary
Seagrass meadows help mitigate climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing carbon in the seabed. However, they can also release methane. We found that seagrass sediments released methane more consistently and at higher rates than nearby bare sand, while bare sand sediments showed occasional methane pulses following storms. Most sediment-produced methane was likely transported laterally or removed through microbial oxidation.
