Short summary
Rivers connect mountains and oceans by transporting and transforming natural materials along their course. We studied the Rapel River system in Chile, from the Andes to the Pacific Ocean, to understand how natural conditions and human activities influence river functioning. Our results show that both strongly modify water quality and biological communities, creating important zones of change. These findings improve our understanding of how rivers may respond to future environmental pressures.
