This study explores how light is absorbed by phytoplankton, non-algal particles, and colored dissolved organic matter in European coastal waters. Using measurements from 202 stations across diverse European marine regions, we reveal strong regional differences in optical properties. These results provide new insights into coastal optical variability and contribute to improving satellite-based observations and ocean color algorithms for monitoring complex coastal ecosystems.

Qualcosa del genere potrebbe andare?: As part of the Traversing European Coastlines research program, the HyperBOOST (Hyperspectral Bio-Optical Observations Sailing on Tara) team collected an unprecedented dataset of optical and biogeochemical measurements during the Tara Europa Expedition. Covering diverse European coastal environments, this resource will improve satellite observations, support the development of new bio-optical models, and advance research on coastal marine ecosystems.

Ocean liming is a technique proposed to mitigate ocean acidification. Every action we take has an impact on the environment and the effects on the invisible world are often overlooked. With this study, we show that lime addition impacts the dynamics of dissolved organic matter, one of the largest reservoirs of carbon on Earth, representing the main source of energy for marine microbes. Further studies to assess the impacts on marine ecosystems are therefore crucial before taking any action.

In this paper, we present the first edition of a global database compiling previously published and unpublished measurements of dissolved organic matter (DOM) collected in coastal waters (CoastDOM v1). Overall, the CoastDOM v1 dataset will be useful to identify global spatial and temporal patterns and to facilitate reuse in studies aimed at better characterizing local biogeochemical processes and identifying a baseline for modelling future changes in coastal waters.

Short summary
Rivers connect mountains and oceans by transporting and transforming natural materials along their course. We studied the Rapel River system in Chile, from the Andes to the Pacific Ocean, to understand how natural conditions and human activities influence river functioning. Our results show that both strongly modify water quality and biological communities, creating important zones of change. These findings improve our understanding of how rivers may respond to future environmental pressures.
