Help by a native English speaker may be necessary to improve this aspect of the paper. Please also note the necessity for clear and consistent formatting of figures and tables.

P. 1, l. 21-23: To avoid repetition, I suggest: “Fluxes of CO2, methane (CH4) and a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) showed complex influences of tidal cycles and light conditions.” (Or similar)

P. 2, l. 9: Delete one “are”.

P. 2, l. 10: comma after “(VOCs)”.

P. 2, l. 20: include commas for long figures (“300,000”, “600,000”).

P. 3, l. 9: Comma after “conditions”; “perturbations” (not pertubations). I suggest a rephrasing along the lines of: “Under aerial conditions, problems may arise from perturbations of turbulence both in the air and the water filled chamber spaces, introduction of artificial gradients, perturbations of the thermal environment of the chamber” (changes in gas composition are the consequence of all of these artefacts, or not?).

P. 3, l. 17: Comma after “conditions”.

P. 3, l. 21: “and” after “(Cook et al., 2007)”, and full-stop after “(Huettel et al., 1997)”.

P. 3, l. 27: Many sentences use inverted structures, such as “During tidal immersion the chamber is continiously purged” – I suggest avoiding this and putting it more clearly as” the chamber is continuously purged During tidal immersion”. (Note: “continuous”, rather than “continuous”). Similar sentence structure that could benefit from this simplifications, see lines 17 and 26 on this page. Also: p. 4, l. 25 and l. 28; p. 5, l. 13;

Fig. 2: CH4 has to have “4” as subscript in axis title. Vertical guide lines are inconsistently formatted between panels, and can in fact be omitted completely. Delete redundant ticks on multiple x-axes – only labelled ticks needed and should be consistent between the three axes.

Fig. 3: No need to refer to colour of upper series in legend. Keep colours indicating tidal cycle consistent between figures (blue looks greenish in Fig. 3). Different colours for data series not in fact required, as all have separate panels. Again, delete vertical guide lines for clarity.

Fig. 4: Y-axis quite cluttered – I suggest larger tick interval. Remove unlabelled ticks from axis. The scale for positive and negative fluxes appears to change – why?

Fig. 5: Combine figure legends for panels a and b. Keep font consistent for all figures. Why the average line for wind direction? Why symbol and line for wind speed? Again, unless two series appear in the same panel, no diversity of colours is required. Where two series appear together, a distinction must be possible when figure is produced in black-and-white, so needs clear difference in symbol and/or line style. At this size, diamonds and dots will look indistinguishable. Guide lines are also not useful. Axis title has to start with capital (“Wind speed”; “Wind direction”

Table 1: Capitals for first word in all entries in title row and first column.

Table 2: Capitals (see above). Also check font size between cells. I suggest a separate row for sample size (n) in title row. Odd spacing between rows.
