Short summary
We studied how riverine water from the mainland of Japan affects the ocean's carbon cycle using decades of Total Alkalinity (TA) data from the Northwest Pacific. Statistical analysis revealed riverine water as a major TA source, reducing coastal acidification by 71 %, but with minimal impact on pH and atmospheric CO2 absorption. Future work aims to refine results with depth-specific data and apply findings to global models.
